N.Y. Times Crossword – Tuesday, August 8, 2017

By: Dan Flanagan
Theme: Fractions with the same numerator and denominator (essentially 1)
Difficulty (0-10):  2
Time: 14:47This one felt even easier than yesterday’s although it took longer to solve. There are four “theme” clues in this puzzle:

17A : 4/4: –  COMMONTIME

27A: 11/11 – VETERANSDAY

44A:20/20 – GREATVISION

60A:50/50 – EVENSTEVEN

To me, 17A answer seemed contorted to fit the theme. I took a variety music lessons for a few years, and I didn’t remember 4/4 time being referred to as common time. Maybe old age has caught up with me because when I looked it up, 4/4 time is frequently referred to as common time. I don’t know how I forgot that. For those who never did take music, the numbers in 4/4 time represent a musical time signature.  The top number tells you how many beats are in a measure. The bottom number tells you what type of note get the beat. So, in 4/4 time there are four beats per measure and those beats are puncuated by four evenly spaced notes. The cadence for 4/4 time is one, two, three, four: one, two three, four: one, two, three, four: and so on…)

It might sound something like this:

13DJack of the old “Tonight Show”PAAR

Before Jimmy Fallon hosted The Tonight Show, there was Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, Johnny Carson and…Jack Paar (Steve Allen, the first host of the show, preceded him). Here’s a clip of Paar hamming it up with Princess Leia’s mom:
